Welcome

Microsoft® Internet Explorer is a World Wide Web (WWW) browser for the Macintosh. The WWW is the fastest growing component of the Internet today and the first to display styled text and graphics. In order to use a WWW browser, you will need a modem or network access, access to the Internet, and software that enables your computer to communicate with the Internet.

Requirements

New and improved features in 2.1

HTML and Multimedia Enhancements

WWW pages look better than ever with new support for frames including floating frames, table borders, and forms submitted using the Mailto tag. In addition, Apple QuickTime VR and enhanced GIF animation support make WWW pages more fun and interesting.

Enhanced History and Favorites lists

Managing your History and Favorites items has never been easier. Each item now contains name, URL, comment, first visited, and last visited information along with protocol icons that make it easy for you to identify Web, FTP, and local sites. You can now create a favorite item by dragging a History item to the Favorites window. History items are automatically sorted by date to help you stay organized. The Favorites window automatically saves its contents including the state of folders, when the window is closed.

Live Scrolling

Live scrolling gives you faster access to the text on a WWW page by letting you scroll though a document while images are being downloaded.

Improved Performance

Performance enhancements let you use your time more efficiently. An improved status bar displays the size and download progress of accessed files so that you can gauge your waiting time. The Cache folder now uses the last-accessed date on the stored files so that previously viewed files and graphics will display much faster.

Expanded Customization

Expanded customization options give you greater control over page display and the Cache folder. The Web Content tab in the Options dialog box lets you disable frames, plug-ins, and page-specified fonts, while new options let you control default font size and font encoding. You can also use the Advanced tab in the Options dialog box to change the name and location of your Cache folder.

Easier to Use

We've renamed some tabs and improved layout options to give you quick and easy access to frequently-used options. Drag and drop support now includes Drop Launch for all file types supported by Internet Explorer.

International Support

Internet Explorer works with the language kits you have to display pages that require different character sets. This includes double-byte character support for languages such as Japanese.

Security

Support for NT authentication allows better integration with NT networks.

Tips for 2.1

Frames

You can view the source of individual frames and print their contents. To view the source, hold down the mouse button over the frame, choose View Source. To print the frame, click inside the frame, and choose Print from the File menu.

Internet Config settings

Uniform Resource Locator s (URLs) contain different protocols such as ftp, mailto, news, telnet, and http, which determine the type of program a browser will use to access a link. While Internet Explorer supports most URLs, you may prefer to use a different program such as your favorite mail or newsreader. Internet Explorer will use the helper application you've specified in your Internet Config helper applications settings. For instructions on how you can add, delete, or change your helper applications, refer to "To use Internet Config to set options" in the online Help.

Laser Writer driver 7.2

Transparent GIF's may not print correctly with Laser Writer driver 7.2. Users should upgrade their printer driver.

Plug-Ins and 2.0 Upgrades

By default, Internet Explorer 2.1 has plug-ins turned off. To enable plug-ins, choose Options from the Edit menu. Click the Web Content tab and select the Load Plug-in Objects check box.
